Dearne Valley are the Winners of the Cake Competition

Guardian Care Homes recently held a Cake Competition in associate with Unilever and Dearne Valley won the competition with their Coffee Cake recipe and won a hamper full of goodies from Unilever.  The winning cake recipe has been forwarded to all the homes for staff to make for themselves and the residents to enjoy with a cup of tea.  The cake recipe will now also be trialled in the Unilever kitchens.  So from all at Guardian Care Homes we wish a very well done to Dearne Valley Care Centre, but also many thanks for all our other homes who took part in this hotly contested competition.   Published on: 16/05/2012

Lennel Care Centre's busy April

Over the past few weeks we have been involved in a local community Open Day. We were able to speak to several people and let them know about the Beatrix Potter Coffee Room with the intention that more people have access to this facility. At the Open Day there was much discussion around the article that appeared in the American magazine ‘The Smithsonian’ that detailed  The Shock of War when Lennel House was used as a Rehabilitation Hospital for Officers suffering from shell shock.  If anyone would like to see the article then please contact Linda McKenzie at Lennel and she will arrange this for you.
We have had live music provided for us by Allan Cutler which the residents thoroughly enjoyed.
During the few very hot days the residents enjoyed coffee in the gardens. With the help of Allan our handyman we compiled a list  of the things we need to do in the garden starting with the planting of potato’s which Allan has done already.
Jack the puppy is now over six months old and is an absolute joy to many of the residents.
We held a very well attended relative’s meeting in April with discussions around the tidying up of the Italian Gardens. This project will be started soon.

New additions at Whim Hall

We have just recently added two small intimate seating areas to Tweed Unit for residents to enjoy.  This affords those residents who like to walk around the unit the facility to have “a wee seat” when they become tired.  Following an activity audit it was noted that several residents had budgies.  Therefore we have included a cage with 2 budgies called Fran and Anna to one of the areas.  This has proved to be a very popular spot for residents who find great delight in talking to the budgies and watching them on their swing.  The other area has a garden bench surrounded with plants, bringing a little of the outdoors in.
The residents in Whim Unit wished for a change to their dining room.  We have altered the appearance of it with new pictures of London, Paris and America, curtains and a few nic-nacs.  The residents are delighted with our efforts and feeling very cosmopolitan.
The staff at Whim Hall have been working hard to raise money to purchase a Digital Reminiscence Unit for the home and, we are almost a third of the way there.  Two of our relatives are participating in the Chain Reaction Bike Marathon in Selkirk later this month and are asking friends and relatives to sponsor them in an attempt to boost our funds.  We wish them well, good luck and thank them for their support in this very worthwhile cause.  We will keep you updated with our progress in reaching our target.Published on: 10/05/2012

The Golden Girls of Dearne Valley

Dearne School kids have joined up with the golden girls at Dearne Valley Care Centre to make jewellery as part of a weekly activity session.  Pupils from Dearne ALC in Goldthorpe have been attending each week and spending time with the residents making a range of bracelets, brooches and necklaces.  Our Activities Co-Ordinator says that our residents always enjoy it and they have produced some really good designs.  They can either choose to wear them or give them away to relatives or friends who come to visit.  The schoolchildren have been visiting Dearne Valley since Christmas regularly each week to make crafts and it is always popular and worthwhile, and have formed really strong bonds with the residents.  Published on: 10/05/2012

Tunstall Hall Garden Fete & Dog Show

Tunstall Hall Care Centre has just held its annual Garden Fete and Dog Show on 28th April. We had many activities and stalls. There were children’s games, tombola, raffle, a white elephant stall, an archery competition, refreshments, a barbeque and many, many more. It was a very popular and entertaining day, despite the weather, and we all got a little cold! Nevertheless, it was enjoyed by all of our residents and visitors, as the rain managed to hold off.We had a variety of classes for everyone to enter their dogs into, from veteran to puppy, to young handlers and waggiest tails, and we had a wide range of dogs in these classes. We managed to get lots of pictures of the dogs and the people having fun.We had very good attendance despite the weather and managed to raise £1024. All proceeds go to Tunstall Hall Comfort Fund, to enable us to take our residents out for extra trips during the summer months, so we will look forward to a few lovely days out in the next few months.Published on: 02/05/2012
